“Aphrodisias: Scenic route, amazing site”
We had a full-day trip with Erkan to Aphrodisias. He was an excellent guide, knowledgeable about everything we saw, and could explain it all in chatty English. Aphrodisias is a superlative site, with so much left of public buildings and beautiful, intact sculpture, you feel it was done yesterday - gives a vibrant sense of what it must have been like to live in this opulent Graeco-Roman city. You could walk for miles if you covered the whole site, but the paths are good on level ground, so it's doable for most people. It's also very quiet, compared say with Ephesus, so you have time and space to muse - and Erkan was a sensitive guide, not hurrying us round.
It's a long way from Bodrum to Aphrodisias (3 - 4 hours) and we'd thought that would be tedious, but Erkan took us by an adventurous route through villages and beautiful countryside, explaining what we were seeing as we went, found a great local restaurant for lunch, and took us back by the faster but still scenic main roads - all in addition to the breathtaking archaeological site itself.
I thoroughly recommend both Aphrodisias and Erkan. (Canada)
